Planetarium in Kozhikode

Kozhikode is a picturesque Malabar Coast in Kerala. Right from the landing of Vasco Da Gama in 1498, the city has attained global fame and has remained so after so many centuries. Though the city was known for its spice trade, now it has become the Kerala’s economic powerhouse and is quite famous for temples, churches, shipbuilding industry, Kakkayam hills for trekking and waterfalls, Dolphins Show, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium for mysteries of space, etc. Of that, let’s see about Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium.

Kozhikode Planetarium

Jawahar Lal Nehru Planetarium in Kozhikode is governed by the NCSM, Govt. of India and is in existence for ten years. In the same premises of the planetarium, Regional Science Centre is also located which also comes under NCSM. Both of them are engaged in the role of disseminating the mysteries of space in the Malabar region, Kerala. The Planetarium enlightens and reveals the mysteries and wonders of universe i.e. of stars and planets. The Planetarium and the 3D theatre help in exploring wonders of science through various expositions and have many facilities to infuse the society with scientific attitude.

In the Planetarium, one can see through the sophisticated Zeiss projector, an array of rolling balls moving in circuitous path, perform acrobatics, ring bells, generate electricity and play musical chimes on their way. You can also see the objects floating in the space and hear the parabolic reflectors carrying whispers from one end to the other of the park.

Some of the programmes organised by the Planetarium are Sky Observation Programmes, Summer Creativity Camps and Rocket Modelling Session. It can host up to 250 audiences and the show timings are 12.00 p.m., 2.00 p.m. 4.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.

In the HD 3D theatre, you can see the three dimensional movies of wildlife, environment, under water life, space exploration, etc for 20 minutes. You will be fascinated with the objects moving out of screen virtually. The show timings are 11.00 a.m. 1.00 p.m., 3.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.

Apart from that, the planetarium also has Science Park, Children’s Park and Dinosaur Park.
With the package ticket of Rs 60, you can visit Science Centre, Planetarium and HD 3D Centre. There are also discounts available for school children and tourists in groups of 25 or more.

How to Reach Kozhikode Planetarium

Nearest Railway Station: From Kozhikode railway station take the old railway over bridge and travel for 350m and turn left at tea store and milma booth onto big bazaar and pass by Taj Agencies situated on the right at 270m take the first right onto the Cherooty Road and Pass by Mathrubhumi employees multi-purpose society ltd and at 850m turn right at Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co Ltd on to CH Flyover and pass by Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank Ltd on the left again turn right at G-Tec Jct and passby Nithyananda Ayurvedic Hospital, turn left onto pavamani road, pass by civil supply pump on the right, turn left at Stadium Jct onto Rajaji Road Passby Saraswathy Music and Sports on the right and turn right at Nandilath G-Mart-Home Appliances Passby Federal Bank Ltd on the left and take the first left onto Jafferkhan Colony and pass the Markaz Mosque on the left and turn right at Veinart Vascular surgery passby Jamiathul Hind Al Islamiyya on the left at 200m turn left and then turn right and you will find the destination on the right.

Nearest Bus Depot: From the Moffusil Bus Stop head towards Rajaji Road west on Mavoor Road and make a U-turn at Kerala State Beverage Corporation and passby Federal Bank Ltd on the left and turn left at Appolo Gold onto Jafferkhan Colony Road and pass the Markaz Mosque on the left and take then right at Veinart Vascular surgery and passby Jamiathul Hind Al Islamiyya on the left at 200m then turn left and then turn right and you will find the destination on the right.

Nearest Airport: From Calicut International airport head west on International Terminal Road then turn right onto Calicut Airport Road passby the Indian Coffee House on the left and at Muthus Bakery Building continue onto Kozhikode-Ferokh-Palakkad Highway and passby Shanthi Ayurvedic Skin Specialty Hospital on the right in 3.5 Km at Ramanattukara-Bypass Circle take the 3rd exit go through one roundabout and passby the Sketch Interiors on the right turn left onto Mavoor Road go through one roundabout passby Ragi Medicals on the left and take slight left at Kurikkal Tiles to stay on Mavoor Road then slight right towards Mini-Bypass Road/SH-54 and at the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Mini-Bypass Road/SH 54 and pass by Indian Oil Petrol Pump on the left then turn left onto KP Chandran Road pass by The Raymond Shop on the right at ICAI Calicut Branch continue onto Jafferkhan Colony Road and turn right again turn right and the destination will be on the right.
