Mishkal Mosque in Kozhikode

Mishkal Mosque in Kozhikode is a unique and fine representation of the Muslim historical architectural forms of the sixteenth century. The Mosque had been constructed in the fourteenth century but it was burnt to the ground in an attack by the Portuguese in 1510. While the original Mosque had five stories when it had first been constructed. When it was reconstructed the mosque was reduced to four storeys. The upper portion of the Mishkal Mosque still bears evidence of the ravages of Portuguese attack.

History of Mishkal Mosque of Kozhikode

This ancient mosque lies in Kuttichira area of Thekkepuram in Calicut. It was originally constructed by a devout and rich merchant from Arabia called Nakhooda Mishkal. In fact, the mosque takes its name from him. The mosque is a typical example of the type of construction common among mosque of those times. This Mishkal mosque was made of huge quantities of timber and did not have the minarets or cupolas that are typical of the later day mosques constructed in that region.
