Kappad Beach in Kozhikode

Kappad otherwise known as Kappakadavu is the rock-studded beach which is historically famous beach as it is here that Vasco Da Gama landed in India on May 27, 1498. He was the first European to land in India with 170 men which led to the relationship between India and the Europe. This also became the permanent sea route to India from Europe and made many merchant companies of Europe to land in India and later to dominate the politics of the country.


Kerala’s spices and the wealth of Malabar was the major attraction that made the Arabs, the Greeks, the Phoenicans, the Romans, the Dutch, the Portugese and the English to land here. Malabar region was then ruled by Zamorins who were shrewd and powerful and Kozhikode was the major trade centre of the region. Zamorins did not encourage the Portugese though they welcomed them. This made them to move southwards to Kollam and Kochi.

You can find a stone monument at the Kappad beach which marks the historical importance of the place. There is an 800 years old temple nearby the rocks.

Today, Kappad beach is a major tourist spot and it could be reached through the picturesque, uncrowded, bewitching and unspoilt backwaters of Kozhikode through the Korappuzha River will lead you to the beach.

In 2007, the beach was beautified and now it has a lovely parka and corniche. The park also has a restaurant, seating and a rest room.

Activities to enjoy at Kappad Beach

Some of the activities that could be taken here are swimming, boat ride into the sea, having sub bath, a gentle stroll along the picturesque beach, etc. There are many beach-side snacks shop that offer a wide variety of fresh and delicious sea foods. Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary and Thusharagiri Waterfalls are the nearby attractions to the Kappad beach.

How to Reach Kappad Beach

Nearest Railway Station: From the Kozhikode railway station which is well connected with other cities of India head towards the old railway over bridge turn left after travelling for 350m at the tea store and milma booth onto big bazaar then pass by Taj Agencies situated on the right at 750m then turn into beach road and passby Puthiyakadavu Maha Ganapathi Buvaneswari Temple on the left side and take the slight left at Blessed Chavara Education Trust on to Edapally –Panvel Highway and passby Hindustan Petroleum outlet on the left and keep right to stay on Edapally – Panvel Highway and passby Thiruvangoor Primary Health Centre on the left and again at 3.8 Km turn left at Pookkad on to Pookkad Beach Road and passby Rekha Studio Pookkad on the left and at 1.3 Km you will find the beach.

Nearest Bus Depot: The nearest bus stop is Moffusil Bus Stop.

Nearest airport: From the Kozhikode (Calicut) international airport head west on International Terminal Road and take the right onto Calicut Airport Road and pass the Indian Coffee House that is situated on the left side and at Muthus Bakery Building continue onto Kozhikode-Ferokh-Palakkad Highway and passby Shanthi Ayurvedic Skin Specialty Hospital on the right in 3.5 Km at Ramanattukara-Bypass Circle take the 3rd exit which is a partial toll road then go through two roundabouts and passby the Sketch Interiors on the right side and take the immediate right at BP Petrol Pump onto Atholi-Kuttiyadi Road/Puthiyangadi Koothuparamba –Chovva Bypass Road/SH 38/SH 54 and keep to Puthiyangadi Koothuparamba –Chowa Bypass/SH 38/SH 54 and pass the Atholi Station located on the right side then turn left at Masjid Hilal onto Kappad –Thusharagiri-Adivaram Road then on the left side pass the Juma Masjid and turn right at Digital vcd & communications onto Edapally – Panvel Highway then walk past the Thiruvangoor Primary Health Center on the left side then take the second left onto Pookad beach road then pass the Rekha Studio Pookkad on the left and you will reach the beach on the left.
